Alright. You opened your image in a text editor. You saved it. And all you have for your efforts is a broken image.

And how do we fix it?

(Note, this tutorial assumes you have the skills from The Tutorial on Audacity)

It's time to grab audacity again.
What you want to do is to follow the instructions for importing images into audacity, but you want to import the ORIGINAL file and the BROKEN file, both using the same settings. These will be separate tracks. To keep on top of which track is which image, you can rename the track by clicking the downwards pointing arrow in the track name and clicking "Name...".

Don't worry if your tracks look different, even if they have different lengths. Just follow the instructions.

For both .bmp and .tiff files you want to zoom (ctrl+1) in on the header of the broken image and select it. Then you want to select "Generate > Silence".

For .tiffs, you will also want to do this to the "footer", or the end of the track. This area is generally not as clear as the header, but you can find it. Generally this amount is good. You can also just cut it out.

What you are doing here is basically replacing the bad header with a good one, since the silence in the track is essentially "no data".

And now you can export the image and you will likely get a cool mixed effect between the original and broken version! You can also Generate>Silence on the main data of the original item to export the broken image as it would have appeared if the header wasn't too broken! Feel free to also do some audacity bending.

If what you export is still broken, try shaving off more of the header (and/or footer) in the broken image.
